athenaOne® Medical Coding Settings (for hospital customers)
athenaOne for Hospitals & Health Systems
You can use the athenaOne Medical Coding Settings page to configure options for athenaOne Medical Coding and E/M leveling. This service is available as an add-on for athenaOne for Hospitals.
Important: To change settings on this page, please contact your Customer Success Manager (CSM) or your Onboarding project team.
On the Main Menu, click Settings > Billing. In the left menu, under Practice Links — Vendor Coding, click athenaOne® Medical Coding Settings.
Note: This link/page is shared by athenaOne Medical Coding hospital customers and ambulatory customers, but athenaOne will display different fields on the page based on the customer type determined during onboarding.

You must be logged in to a department that uses athenaOne for Hospitals & Health Systems, and your organization must use athenaOne® Medical Coding to access this page.
Your organization must sign a contract before using this feature. Please contact your Customer Success Manager to begin the process.

Levels of care are grouped together.

The All Inpatient and All Outpatient fields enable you to send all inpatient or all outpatient visits to athenaOne Medical Coding.
- The Exclusive box appears for each chart routing option. This field indicates that your organization has contracted with athenahealth to send all visits, or all visits for a particular level of care, to athenaOne Medical Coding.
- The Include Backlog box shows the number of visits in the backlog.

To configure the On-Demand Medical Coding settings, you must have the Vendor Coding Settings Admin permission.
- Display the athena Medical Coding Settings page: On the Main Menu, click Settings > Billing. In the left menu, under Practice Links — Vendor Coding, click athenaOne® Medical Coding Settings.
- Chart Routing — Select one of these options:
- Route all charts to athena Medical Coding Service — Select this option to send all charts to athenaOne Medical Coding.
Note: Select the Include backlog option to send all charts currently in "Ready for Coding" status to Medical Coding. - Configure Routing and E/M Leveling — Select this option to control which levels of care you send to athenaOne Medical Coding.
- Route all charts to athena Medical Coding Service — Select this option to send all charts to athenaOne Medical Coding.
- For each level of care, select In-house if you want your organization to continue coding these charts, or select athena Medical Coding Service if you want athenaOne Medical Coding to code these charts.
- For either chart routing option, select the Include backlog option to send all charts currently in "Ready for Coding" status.
- Click Save.
Your organization can begin sending charts to the coding service immediately.
If your organization uses the On-Demand Medical Coding service, you must have the Vendor Coding Settings Admin role to configure the service.
- Display the athena Medical Coding Settings page: On the Main Menu, click Settings > Billing. In the left menu, under Practice Links — Vendor Coding, click athenaOne® Medical Coding Settings.
- Chart Routing — Select Configure Routing and E/M Leveling.
If the level of care routes through athenaOne Medical Coding
- Contact your customer success manager if you need to check the box in the Exclusive column.
Note: This field indicates that your organization has contracted to send all visits for that particular level of care to athenaOne Medical Coding. - Select one of these options in the E/M Leveling column:
- None — Select this option if your organization wants to continue E/M coding.
- Professional & Facility — Select this option if your organization wants athenahealth to code both professional and facility fees.
- Facility — Select this option if your organization wants athenahealth to code facility fees only.
- Professional — Select this option if your organization wants athenahealth to code professional fees only.
If the level of care routes in-house
- Select athena Medical Coding Service from the menu in the Routing column.
- Contact your customer success manager if you need to check the box in the Exclusive column.
Note: This field indicates that your organization has contracted to send all visits for that particular level of care to athenaOne Medical Coding. - Select one of these options in the E/M Leveling column:
- None — Select this option if your organization wants to continue E/M coding.
- Professional & Facility — Select this option if your organization wants athenahealth to code both professional and facility fees.
- Facility — Select this option if your organization wants athenahealth to code facility fees only.
- Professional — Select this option if your organization wants athenahealth to code professional fees only.
- Click Save.
