Common Patient Index
This page allows you to register a patient from one provider group in another provider group. You can also use this page to view a summary of patient information including:
- Provider groups in which the patient is registered
- Patient data, including record numbers, that are shared
- Patient insurance policies that are shared
Use the Find tool to locate the patient account. On the Find a Patient page, click CPI View for the patient
On the Patient Actions Bar, click Registration, and then click CPI View
Your practice must use athenaEnterprise with Provider-based data permissions to access this page.
Note: With athenaEnterprise and the Chart Groups feature, when you configure the shared patient fields for the Common Patient Index (CPI), make sure to include the Block Patient field to avoid inappropriately allowing access to blocked patients.
Method 1: Register Exact Copy
- Display the Common Patient Index page: Use the Find tool to locate the patient account. On the Find a Patient page, click CPI View for the patient, or On the Patient Actions Bar, click Registration, and then click CPI View.
- Select the provider group for the new registration from the menu at the bottom of the page.
- Click Register Exact Copy. A confirmation message appears. (Click the patient number link to go to the patient Quickview.)
Note: The new patient record is populated with values from shared patient fields (and record numbers) only. Patient insurance policies are automatically copied. Case type policies are not copied.
Method 2: Register Interactively (use this method if you want to edit the registration information)
- Click Register Interactively. The Patient Registration page appears with the patient's demographic information pre-filled from the Common Patient Index.
- Edit the registration fields as needed on the Patient Registration page.
Note: If patient insurance policies are set to "copy on registration," you can select which policies to copy, but you cannot select case policies.
The Common Patient Index is a database of patient registration information that can be accessed by all the provider groups in your athenaEnterprise organization. Each patient record is assigned to a single provider group, and a copy of the patient record (actually a subset of the original data) is recorded in the Common Patient Index (CPI).
Configuration settings allow you to control exactly what patient demographic information is included in the CPI record, and to control user access to CPI records. See athenaEnterprise and Patient Privacy for more information about the Common Patient Index and shared fields.
Note: The provider groups available in the menu at the bottom of the Common Patient Index page are determined by your user access within your Enterprise organization.
Note: With athenaEnterprise and the Chart Groups feature, when you configure the shared patient fields for the Common Patient Index (CPI), make sure to include the Block Patient field to avoid inappropriately allowing access to blocked patients.
Refer to the Field Reference table for Patient Registration to see the fields that are Available to Select as CPI Shared Patient Fields in the Common Patient Index. Additional fields from Quickview can also be selected to be CPI shared fields. See the Practice Setting: CPI Shared Patient Fields for a complete list of available fields.
Common Patient Index (CPI) grouped fields must be maintained together — (in the Practice Setting: CPI Shared Patient Fields) if you select one of the fields in the group to be a CPI Shared Patient Field, all fields in that group must also be selected for sharing.
Refer to the CPI Shared Patient Fields Group column in the Field Reference table for Patient Registration to see which Common Patient Index fields are grouped and must be maintained as a set.
