The Practice Performance Review (PPR) is a tool that can help you better understand and drive your practice performance in three primary areas: More Revenue, Faster Revenue, and Less Work.
The Practice Performance Review includes:
- Report Overlay — When you first access the PPR, a temporary "About this Report" overlay appears to orient you to the new report. Refer to this view for an overall understanding of the PPR story and layout. You can refer back to this outline by clicking the About this report link.
- Goal-specific tabs:
- Overview tab — This tab lets you see a top-line metric for each goal consolidated in a single view.
- More Revenue tab — We summarize More Revenue in the total payments that your practice has received. This shows total payments from all sources and gives a six-month trailing history so you can view overall trends.
- Faster Revenue tab — We monitor Faster Revenue through Days in Accounts Receivable (DAR). athenahealth is constantly focused on reducing this number through improvements to our rules database and sophisticated operations.
- Less Work tab — We illustrate Less Work using two metrics: Claims Requiring Additional Client Work and Client Service Needs Relative to Claims Generated. Our goal is to drive down the amount of work that you need to do to get paid.
- Optimal Setup tab — We display a checklist of key practice settings to allow you to review whether you are maximizing all athenahealth services. Along with your current settings, we also display the athenahealth recommendations for those settings, as well as a brief description of each setting.
- Comparison Data:
- Benchmarking — Clear, integrated peer benchmarking and performance guidelines add context to your results.
- Guidelines — Dynamic and Static:
- Dynamic performance guidelines are determined by the range of performance of all practices on athenaOne and can be identified as the shaded green bar. The dark green range includes the highest-performing practices for this metric, the middle range shows those that are in line with the average, and the light green indicates the performance range of the lowest-performing practices. Metrics using this type of guideline can often be influenced by specialty types or external factors, such as seasonality; therefore a more flexible dynamic approach was applied.
- Static performance guidelines are shown as a green, yellow, and red bar below some of the charts with your results marked by an arrow. Each color represents athenahealth recommendations of result ranges that are Good, Fair, or Need Improvement, regardless of the performance of other practices.
- Pre-athenahealth — If you've provided us with data about how your practice was performing before joining athenahealth, we display that data below the chart and to the right of the Performance Guidelines. This is a great way to review the impact of athenahealth on your performance and quantify our ongoing value to your practice.
- Clinical Perspective — Targeted information about the throughput and efficiency of your providers. There are three different ways to look at your provider performance:
- Financial — Collections per claim
- Production — Work RVUs (also considers intensity or complexity)
- Volume — Sheer amount of work by totaling monthly appointments
- Metric Definitions — Most metrics reported in your PPR also include a Learn more about this metric link, which shows the detailed description of how we arrived at the numbers you're seeing.
- Tips Box — These tips within each section offer advice on how to improve performance in that area of your practice.
- Report Builder — Dig deeper with Report Builder links for many of the metrics reported in your PPR.
- Auto-Message Notification — For your convenience, athenaOne automatically sends a notification message to your athenaOne Inbox with each new month's PPR publication. Only users who have access to view the PPR receive the notification. Your PPR is scheduled to be automatically published by the 15th of every month. If you have a close date after the 13th, your PPR is automatically published the day after your close date.
With respect to Practice Performance Reviews, athenahealth generates only the custom reporting groups whose Group Type is "providergroup." If you already created custom reporting groups, the custom reporting group Performance Reviews are generated only after you update your existing custom group's Group Type to "Provider Group" and after the next month's PPRs are actually published. This change does not immediately update the PPR reports to include custom reporting groups. See also: Custom Reporting Groups and Performance Reviews.

Note: In order for a provider to appear on the Clinician Performance Review, the provider must be associated with a specialty on the Providers page.
Clinician Performance Reviews analyze your providers' financial, productivity, and coding data, offering benchmarking insights. Providers can compare their productivity and common billing codes against other providers in their organization, as well as against other athenaOne providers in their specialty.
Practice managers and administrators can review the performance of every provider in the organization. In most cases, individual providers can review only their own performance data and anonymous benchmarking data for other providers in the organization.
Note: If your organization has the Provider-Based Data Permissions feature enabled, the ability of providers to see their own and other providers' information is configured on the User Access to Provider Data page. Non-provider access to provider data is also configured on the User Access to Provider Data page.
Benchmarking data is available only for providers in the same specialty. Providers can spot trends in their performance and ascertain how well they performed compared to their peers.
Best practice: Practice managers and administrators should review the performance of every provider in the organization monthly. Providers should review their own performance monthly.
