Custom Reporting Groups
This page allows you to manage custom groupings of your provider groups, providers, departments, and enterprise provider groups for reporting purposes. You can use custom reporting groups to aggregate and slice financial data with any combination of provider, department, and provider group. Providers can belong to more than one provider group for reporting purposes.

On the Main
Menu, click Settings > Billing. In the left menu, under Practice Links — Reporting, click Custom Reporting Groups

Your practice must use athenaEnterprise with provider group-based data permissions to access this page.
You must have the Billing Admin role to access this page.

- Display the Custom Reporting Groups page: On the Main
Menu, click Settings
> Billing. In the left menu, under Practice Links — Reporting, click Custom Reporting Groups.
- Click Add new.
Additional fields appear. - Name — Enter a short but descriptive name for the custom reporting group, so you can identify it in report drop-down lists.
- Group Specialty — Select the specialty for the reporting group.
- Group Type — Select the type of group for this custom reporting group. If you select an option, the list of providers, provider groups, or departments appears.
Tip: Creation of custom provider groups can generate custom group Practice Performance Reviews (PPRs).
Check individual boxes to specify membership in the custom reporting group or click select all.
Note: Although you cannot combine group types into a single custom reporting group, you can select more than one custom reporting group when you run a report, so the report results contain combined groups. - Notes — Enter any notes to describe this custom reporting group.
- Click Save.
You can also edit and delete custom reporting groups.
If you click edit for a custom reporting group, you can also view the Audit history.
Note: When you run a report using custom reporting groups, any group type (provider, department, provider groups) included in more than one custom reporting group is counted multiple times, because the report total line is the sum of all rows.
Note: If the components of a custom group (such as provider group selections) are changed, then published Custom Group Performance Reviews will update accordingly. Therefore, please make changes carefully. Every Custom Group Performance Review also contains a hide/show footer that displays the components that make up the performance review's results to assist you in this situation.

An athenaEnterprise organization divides its organization into two provider groups by facility. The physical location has nothing to do with the group's care model; the care model actually varies by facility.
Facility #1 uses a collaborative care model, in which a team shares a common group of patients; team members vary by type (e.g., MD, DO, PA) and specialty.
Facility #1 creates custom reporting groups that include all care team members, as defined by provider group, provider, or department, using the values in the drop-down list.
In facility #2, the providers are broken up into departments by specialty and further sub-divided by area of focus. Again, their grouping has nothing to do with their location, and their sub-specialty may or may not be known in athenaOne.
Facility #2 creates custom reporting groups that mirror the service departments grouped by specialty.

After your practice defines your custom reporting groups, you can report on them using Use Custom Reporting Groups filters in the advanced view of the A/R Aging Wizard, the advanced view of the Activity Wizard, and the Collections AR Report.
Note: All three types of custom reporting groups allow you to filter results in Report Builder by these custom groups.
With respect to Practice Performance Reviews, athenahealth generates only the custom reporting groups whose Group Type is "providergroup." If you already created custom reporting groups, the custom reporting group Performance Reviews are generated only after you update your existing custom group's Group Type to "Provider Group" and after the next month's PPRs are actually published. This change does not immediately update the PPR reports to include custom reporting groups. See also: Custom Reporting Groups and Performance Reviews.
