Gender Determination for Quality Measures and Guidelines

Quality Reporting programs in athenahealth includes gender-specific measures which are configured based on ‘Legal Sex’ or ‘Assigned Sex at Birth’ fields, depending on the specifications set by the respective program steward.

For instance:

  • MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System): Uses the ‘Legal Sex’ field to determine patient gender.
  • UDS (Uniform Data System) and Clinical Guidelines: Use the ‘Assigned Sex at Birth’ field to determine patient gender.
  • HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set): Considers both ‘Legal Sex’ and ‘Assigned Sex at Birth’ to determine patient gender.
